Steam Locomotive 3D Modeling
Part of Final year project – Steam Locomotive Modeling
- Time Spent : 6 weeks
- Used Tool : Maya, Adobe Substance Painter
- Focused on : Modeling, Texturing, Compositing
– What is This?
As a part of my final-year project, I created a steam locomotive model intended for use in the project. I modeled it in Maya and textured it in Substance Painter. I aimed to convey a sturdy, aged feel, and plan to use the locomotive as a metaphorical object representing technological progress (Industrial Revolution).
I will later add VFX in Houdini and create terrain and factory models to assemble everything into a single scene.

Reflection
This was my first time using Substance Painter, so adapting to a new workflow was quite challenging. Unlike online tutorials, real work involved many errors and time-consuming troubleshooting, but it turned out to be a valuable learning experience.
One area that needs further improvement is – “how can I make the work more appealing to an audience?”. Even a well-made 3D model isn’t inherently valuable on its own. Its value is determined by how it’s used within content.
For my final project I plan to produce a full 3D short film, so by adding VFX in Houdini and enhancing the environment design and lighting to make the footage more striking, the project can become compelling content.
