Vicotrian Camera
3D Modeling Module Assignment – Victorian Camera
- Time Spent : 6 weeks
- Used Tool : Maya, Substance Painter
- Focused on : Modeling, Texturing
– What is This?
For the second assignment in the 3D modeling module, theme was ‘prop modeling’. I Choosed a Victorian-era camera to produce.
The primary goal was to produce more detailed, refined modeling.
In class, modeling and texturing were done in Maya.
About six months later, I improved the textures and worked on compositing and lighting for a concept shot, including the use of an HDRI background image.
I used the HDRI image from: https://polyhaven.com/a/combination_room

While creating 3D models at the time, I often wondered what makes a “good 3D model.”
Firstly, and obviously, it must be designed appropriately for its intended use. For example, if it will be used in animation, you need to design certain parts with folding and unfolding in mind.
The course I took was part of a Game Art program, so for a prop to be used in a game, a key criterion for “good modeling” is how well it conveys the essence of the object or delivers detailed representation within limited resources (allocated resource), and whether it fits the game’s atmosphere (including storytelling).
After improving my hard-surface modeling skills, I thought it would be good to practice minimizing the number of vertices used and similar optimizations. It seems the basic economic principle I learned — maximizing efficiency with limited resources — applies here as well.
